MAN UNDERGROUND (2016)
Shot primarily in Greene County, but also in Schenectady, Gloversville and Schoharie, MAN UNDERGROUND won the 2016 New Flesh Award for Best First Feature from Montreal's incredibly competitive Fantasia International Film Festival. The festival's co-director, Mitch Davis, perfectly described the film as follows:
'Former geologist and current divorcee Willem Koda is a UFO conspiracy theorist. Or, is he just uniquely well informed? Whatever the case, based on firsthand observations, he’s certain that the U.S. government is actively hiding extraterrestrial lifeforms. Willem decides that the most assured way to get the word out to the general population would be to make a no-budget DIY film with the help of various neighbourhood friends and acquaintances. He opts to star in it himself and before long, his film also becomes a strange depiction of the events that led to his marriage falling apart, tracing the route to the neurotic and possibly brilliant misfit he is today. As Willem stares into the abyss of his past, something much darker and more sinister begins to come out. Willem may actually be in very serious danger.'
'A sometimes funny, sometimes frightening work... MAN UNDERGROUND also spikes as a cautionary tale about emotionally fragile filmmakers making cripplingly personal works. It is a very special film that instantly announces its co-writing/directing team of Michael Borowiec and Sam Marine as major new talents to watch. In fact, you won’t be able to look away.'
Not rated. Running time 95 minutes.
Filmmakers Michael Borowiec and Sam Marine will introduce the film and stick around afterward for a short Q&A.
